Why anatomy still matters in an age of digital medicine

The connection between structural understanding, physiological context and responsible clinical software.

PERSPECTIVES / ANOVALYX

Anatomy describes the physical organization of the human body, but a modern view of anatomy also connects structures to function and physiology. An organ cannot be understood in isolation from the circulation, innervation and tissue systems that support it.

Digital visualization makes complex anatomical relationships easier to explore. Clinical information systems can present measurements, imaging findings and documentation together, but only if the underlying information is structured accurately and interpreted with appropriate context.

For designers of medical computing systems, anatomical accuracy, terminology, traceability and human oversight are foundational. A convincing interface is not evidence that a clinical model is correct or suitable for patient care.

This editorial discusses general research and design principles, not a clinical product or experimental finding.
